INI-CET Negative Marking: When to Guess and When to Skip

INI-CET marks +1 / −1/3. The simple arithmetic of when a guess helps, why ties punish wrong answers, and a three-pass method for the exam.

Quick Answer

INI-CET gives +1 for a correct answer and −1/3 for a wrong one. A blind guess among four options is break-even on average, but eliminating one option makes a guess worth about +0.11 marks, and eliminating two about +0.33 marks. Guess when you can eliminate, skip when you cannot — and remember AIIMS breaks ties by fewer negative marks.

Negative marking scares people into leaving easy marks on the table, or into guessing everything and bleeding marks they never notice. The INI-CET rule is simple enough to work out exactly, and once you have seen the numbers the right habit is obvious.

Key Takeaways

  • ✓Marking: +1 correct, −1/3 wrong, 0 unanswered (200 questions, 200 marks)
  • ✓A blind guess among four options: expected value 0 (break-even)
  • ✓Eliminate one option: about +0.11 marks per guess; eliminate two: about +0.33 marks
  • ✓Ties are broken first by fewer negative marks, so careless wrong answers can cost rank

1The arithmetic in one table

Each option you can rule out with confidence changes the odds of a guess. With +1 for right and −1/3 for wrong:

Options left after eliminationChance of being rightAverage marks per guess
4 (blind guess)25%0 (break-even)
3 (one ruled out)33%+0.11 marks
2 (two ruled out)50%+0.33 marks

So a pure blind guess neither helps nor hurts on average — it just adds luck. But a guess after real elimination is clearly worth taking. Across 20 such questions, guessing after ruling out two options adds about 6.7 marks on average.

2Why skipping blind guesses still matters

If blind guesses are break-even, why not take them? Because of how AIIMS breaks ties. The prospectus lists the tie-break order as: (1) Fewer negative marks; (2) Higher percentage in the qualifying degree (MBBS/BDS); (3) Older by age; (4) Name in alphabetical order. INI-CET ranks are crowded, and many candidates finish on the same total. Ten blind guesses add nothing to your expected score but very likely add negative marks — exactly what the first tie-breaker counts.

Watch out: The prospectus lists the question types as “Single Correct Choice and Multiple Correct Choice”. Read the instructions on the exam screen for how each type is marked before you start, and do not assume every question works the same way.

3A three-pass method for each 45-minute section

  • Pass 1 — sure answers. Answer everything you know in one go. Do not linger. Mark anything that needs thought.
  • Pass 2 — work the marked ones. Eliminate options with reasons you can state. If you get to two options, answer. If you are still at four, leave it.
  • Pass 3 — last minutes. Recheck answers you changed and any long stems where a single word (“except”, “not”, “most common”) flips the answer.

Kinase Tip: Track two numbers in every mock: wrong answers, and wrong answers you would have skipped with this rule. If the second is more than a handful, your guessing habit is costing you rank. More on the full exam in our INI-CET exam pattern guide.

Build the habit in mocks, not on exam day. For the next two full tests, mark every guess on your rough sheet with how many options you had eliminated. After the test, total the marks those guesses actually earned. Most people find their two-option guesses pay well and their four-option guesses cost them — which is exactly what the table predicts.

4How it differs from NEET-PG

NEET-PG marks +4 / −1: the penalty is a quarter of the reward. In INI-CET it is a third. So a blind guess is slightly positive on average in NEET-PG (+0.25 marks) but exactly break-even in INI-CET. Habits carried over from NEET-PG mocks can therefore cost you more here; in both exams, elimination is what turns a guess into expected marks. ?Frequently Asked Questions

What is the negative marking in INI-CET?

INI-CET awards +1 for a correct answer and deducts 1/3 for a wrong one; unanswered questions score 0. The paper has 200 questions for 200 marks.

Should I guess in INI-CET?

A blind guess among four options has an expected value of 0 (break-even). If you can rule out one option, a guess is worth about +0.11 marks on average; rule out two and it is worth about +0.33 marks. So guess when you can eliminate, and skip when you cannot.

How do negative marks affect ties in INI-CET?

When two candidates have the same marks, AIIMS ranks first by fewer negative marks, according to the prospectus. Avoidable wrong answers can therefore cost rank even when they do not change your total.

Is INI-CET marking the same as NEET-PG?

No. NEET-PG uses +4 / −1 on 180 questions; INI-CET uses +1 / −1/3 on 200. The penalty is a quarter of the reward in NEET-PG and a third in INI-CET, so blind guessing is slightly worse in INI-CET.
