INI-CET Eligibility Criteria — Degree, Internship, Marks and Age

Who can write INI-CET for the January 2027 session, straight from the AIIMS prospectus: the degree you need, the internship cut-off date, minimum MBBS marks, council registration, institute age limits and the rules for foreign nationals, OCI holders and sponsored candidates.

Last verified: 30 September 2026 against the AIIMS INI-CET Prospectus Part A and Part B (January 2027 session).

Quick Answer

To write INI-CET for the January 2027 session you need an MBBS (or BDS for MDS) recognised by the NMC/DCI, a 12-month internship completed on or before 31 January 2027, 55% aggregate in your MBBS/BDS exams (50% for SC/ST) and a medical or dental council registration. The exam has no age limit; SCTIMST and NIMHANS set course-wise ones.

Who can write INI-CET?

AIIMS New Delhi runs INI-CET for all participating institutes, and Prospectus Part A sets the rules for applying and sitting the exam. Admission rules for each institute sit in its own Part B, so a candidate can be eligible to write the exam and still be eligible for only some institutes. For Indian nationals, Part A asks for:

RequirementWhat the prospectus says
DegreeMBBS for MD, MS, DM (6-year), MCh (6-year) and MD (Hospital Administration); BDS for MDS — from a university recognised by the NMC/MCI or DCI
Internship12 months of compulsory rotating internship completed on or before 31 January 2027
Minimum marks55% aggregate of all professional exams (50% for SC/ST)
RegistrationProvisional or permanent registration with the NMC, DCI or a state medical/dental council
No existing PG seatNot done or pursuing MD/MS/MDS/DM/MCh/MD (Hospital Administration) at the time of seat allocation
AgeNo limit to sit the exam; institute limits apply at admission (see below)

How does the internship cut-off date work?

INI-CET is held twice a year, and each session sets its own internship deadline. For the January 2027 session, the prospectus fixes it at 31 January 2027 for every participating institute. If your internship ends after that date you cannot register for this session — plan for the next one instead.

AIIMS does not check certificates before the exam. You are allowed to write it provisionally, and your internship completion is verified when you report to the institute that allots you a seat. The prospectus is blunt about misuse: a candidate who gives a false internship date just to sit the exam loses the candidature and can be debarred from future INI-CETs.

What minimum MBBS or BDS marks do you need?

CandidateMinimum aggregate
SC / ST50%
All other categories, including OBC and EWS55%
PwBDSame as the candidate's own category
Sponsored (Indian national)Same as above, by category
Indian national with a foreign MBBSFMGE marks are used instead of the aggregate, same thresholds
Foreign national55% or equivalent (grading converted by the university)

Enter the aggregate of all professional exams, not just final year — AIIMS flags this as a common form error. If you cleared a subject in a supplementary exam, use the marks from the attempt you passed.

Is there an age limit for INI-CET?

There is no age limit to write the exam. Two institutes set upper age limits for admission in their Part B, and the seat-allocation software applies them when you choose those courses:

InstituteUpper age limitRelaxation
SCTIMST Thiruvananthapuram40 years as of 1 January 2027; 50 years for sponsored candidatesSC/ST +5, OBC +3, ex-servicemen +5, PwBD +5 years
NIMHANS BengaluruCourse-wise; e.g. MD (Neurological Rehabilitation): 32 (General), 35 (OBC), 37 (SC/ST), 45 (sponsored)PwBD up to 5 years; SC/ST and OBC relaxations where seats are reserved
AIIMS, JIPMER, PGIMERNone in Part B—

Which institutes take admissions through INI-CET?

For the January 2027 session, Part A lists 23 Institutes of National Importance:

  • 19 AIIMS campuses: New Delhi, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Nagpur, Patna, Raipur, Rishikesh, Bibinagar, Bathinda, Deoghar, Mangalagiri, Raebareli, Kalyani, Bilaspur, Gorakhpur, Guwahati, Rajkot, Jammu.
  • JIPMER Puducherry — jipmer.edu.in
  • NIMHANS Bengaluru — nimhans.ac.in
  • PGIMER Chandigarh — pgimer.edu.in
  • SCTIMST Thiruvananthapuram — sctimst.ac.in

Courses are MD, MS, DM (6-year), MCh (6-year), MDS and MD (Hospital Administration). Institute-only categories — rural-area service at PGIMER, Karnataka domicile at NIMHANS, institutional preference at AIIMS and JIPMER — need the certificates listed in that institute's Part B.

What are the rules for foreign nationals, OCI and sponsored candidates?

  • Foreign nationals need 55% aggregate and a No Objection Certificate from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, submitted by 30 October 2026. An NOC from the Ministry of External Affairs alone is not accepted.
  • OCI/PIO card holders born before, and holding the card before, 4 March 2021 are treated as Indian nationals for unreserved seats only. Other OCI/PIO holders are treated as foreign nationals. Upload the earliest valid OCI card by the registration deadline.
  • Sponsored candidates must be employees of the sponsoring authority with 3 years of service as on 31 January 2027 (all AIIMS, SCTIMST, NIMHANS) or 31 December 2026 (JIPMER, PGIMER), and upload the sponsorship certificate by 30 October 2026.
  • Sponsored and foreign-national candidates compete only for their own seats, not general seats — and vice versa.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the internship cut-off date for INI-CET?▼
For the January 2027 session, your 12-month compulsory rotating internship must be complete on or before 31 January 2027. AIIMS says candidates who finish after that date are not eligible to register. Each session has its own cut-off, printed in Section IV of Prospectus Part A on aiimsexams.ac.in.
What minimum MBBS marks do I need for INI-CET?▼
55% aggregate across all MBBS professional exams for General, OBC and EWS candidates, and 50% for SC/ST. PwBD candidates follow the rule for their own category. Indians with a foreign MBBS use their FMGE marks instead of the aggregate.
Is there an age limit for INI-CET?▼
Not for the exam itself. Some institutes set course-wise limits in Part B: SCTIMST allows up to 40 years (50 for sponsored candidates) and NIMHANS sets limits such as 32 years (General) for MD (Neurological Rehabilitation). AIIMS, JIPMER and PGIMER set none in their Part B.
Which institutes admit through INI-CET?▼
23 institutes for the January 2027 session: 19 AIIMS campuses (including AIIMS New Delhi) plus JIPMER Puducherry, NIMHANS Bengaluru, PGIMER Chandigarh and SCTIMST Thiruvananthapuram, for MD, MS, DM (6-year), MCh (6-year), MDS and MD (Hospital Administration).
Can I write INI-CET if I am already doing MD or MS?▼
You can sit the exam, but candidates who have done or are pursuing MD/MS/MDS/DM (6-year)/MCh (6-year)/MD (Hospital Administration) in any subject at the time of seat allocation are not considered for admission, and a false undertaking cancels the seat.
Do I need medical council registration to apply?▼
Yes. The prospectus requires a provisional or permanent registration with the NMC, DCI or any state medical/dental council at the time of online registration. After selection you must also register with the council of the state where your institute is.
Can foreign nationals and OCI card holders apply?▼
Yes. Foreign nationals need 55% aggregate and a No Objection Certificate from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (an MEA-only NOC is not accepted). OCI holders who got the card before 4 March 2021 count as Indian nationals for unreserved seats only; others count as foreign nationals.
