DNB vs MD/MS: Which Is Better After NEET-PG?

DNB, MD and MS are all three-year broad-speciality qualifications you can reach through NEET-PG counselling. They differ in who awards them, where you train and how the final exam works. Here is what NBEMS and NMC actually say.

Last verified: 6 October 2026 against NBEMS DNB Broad Specialty page, NMC faculty qualification regulations, 2025, NMC PGMER-2023 and MCC PG counselling.

Quick Answer

DNB is awarded by NBEMS; MD / MS by universities under NMC. Both run 3 years after MBBS and both are reached through NEET-PG and MCC counselling. NMC’s 2025 faculty regulations treat a broad-speciality DNB as equivalent to MD / MS for teaching when it is earned in an institution with an attached hospital or a hospital of 500+ beds.

Is DNB equivalent to MD / MS?

The equivalence that matters for a career is set in regulation 7 of NMC’s Medical Institutions (Qualifications of Faculty) Regulations, 2025 (Gazette notification of 30 June 2025). It says a broad-speciality or super-speciality DNB is considered equivalent to the corresponding qualification in the regulations’ tables, when awarded by NBEMS after training in a medical institution with an attached hospital or in a hospital with 500 or more beds. For teaching, a broad-speciality DNB from a hospital with fewer than 500 beds needs an additional 1-year senior residency in a recognised medical institution in the relevant specialty.

The same regulations also list a DNB among the qualifications that make a person eligible for appointment as a Senior Resident, alongside MD and MS. Before you take a DNB seat, ask the hospital how many beds it has and whether it is a medical institution with an attached hospital.

How do you get a DNB seat?

NBEMS states that post-MBBS candidates qualify through NEET-PG, and that merit-based counselling for the 3-year DNB seats is conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee of DGHS, MoHFW, along with the counselling for MD / MS / PG diploma courses. After you choose a DNB seat, NBEMS registers you as a trainee for the course and issues a Letter of Provisional Registration to you and the training institution. See NEET PG counselling for the MCC rounds and rules.

A separate 2-year post-diploma DNB route exists for holders of a recognised 2-year PG diploma in the same specialty; it uses NBEMS’s DNB-PDCET entrance and NBEMS counselling. See the DNB branch guide for the specialities.

What are the real differences?

FactorDNBMD / MS
DurationSame 3-year length as MD / MSSame length; no shorter option for a degree
Faculty postsEquivalent under NMC regulation 7, subject to the bed-strength conditionNo equivalence condition to meet
Seat termsSet by the institution and NBEMS: check fees, stipend and bond per seatSet by the college or state: check fees, stipend and bond per seat
Exit processNBEMS thesis acceptance and two-stage final examUniversity exam; PGMER-2023 also needs a presentation or publication and online research-methodology course
Training environmentHospital-based; quality depends on the accredited hospitalCollege-based; quality depends on the department

Training quality varies by hospital or department far more than by qualification label. Use the branch guide to weigh the work and career fit, and the bond and stipend guide to check seat terms.

What happens at the end of DNB training?

DNB trainees take a centralised Formative Assessment Test in the second year (theory plus work-place-based assessment), which guides progress but does not add marks to the final result. The DNB Final is a two-stage exam, usually held in June and December: only those who clear theory sit the practical. The DNB is conferred on trainees who clear both and whose thesis NBEMS has accepted, on enrolment for the NBEMS convocation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the full form of DNB in medical?▼
DNB stands for Diplomate of National Board, a postgraduate qualification awarded by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) after training in NBEMS-accredited hospitals.
What is FNB?▼
FNB is the fellowship qualification run by NBEMS, with its own exit examination, separate from the broad-speciality DNB. NBEMS lists DNB, DrNB, Fellowship (FNB) and diploma programmes as distinct courses.
Is DNB equal to MD / MS?▼
For teaching posts, NMC's Medical Institutions (Qualifications of Faculty) Regulations, 2025 (regulation 7) treat a broad-speciality Diplomate of National Board as equivalent to the corresponding MD / MS qualification when it is awarded by NBEMS after training in a medical institution with an attached hospital or in a hospital with 500 or more beds. The course length is the same: 3 years after MBBS.
Who awards DNB and who awards MD / MS?▼
DNB is awarded by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. MD and MS are degrees awarded by universities for courses run in NMC-permitted medical colleges under NMC's PG regulations.
Do I get DNB through NEET-PG?▼
Yes. NBEMS states that post-MBBS candidates enter the 3-year DNB course after qualifying NEET-PG, and that merit-based counselling for these seats is run by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) of DGHS, MoHFW, together with the MD / MS / PG diploma counselling.
Is a DNB holder eligible to be a faculty member?▼
Under regulation 7 of NMC's 2025 faculty regulations, a broad-speciality DNB is equivalent to the matching MD / MS in Table A to D qualifications when awarded after training in an institution with an attached hospital or a hospital of 500+ beds. For DNB obtained in a hospital with fewer than 500 beds, NMC requires an additional 1-year senior residency in a recognised medical institution in the relevant specialty for equivalence in teaching.
Can a DNB holder do DM or MCh?▼
NMC's PGMER-2023 lists "M.D./DNB" or "M.S./DNB" in the same subject as the feeder qualification for most DM and MCh courses. Check the exact feeder subjects for the course you want in the annexures of PGMER-2023.
How is the DNB final exam different from the MD / MS exam?▼
DNB Final is a two-stage NBEMS examination: theory first, then a practical for those who clear theory. NBEMS also requires an accepted thesis before the DNB is conferred. MD / MS final exams are held by the university and, under PGMER-2023, also consist of theory, clinical or practical and viva voce, with the theory held before the practical.
Do DNB trainees get a stipend?▼
NBEMS says all DNB trainees are paid a minimum stipend as per NBEMS guidelines, for the full training period including eligible leave, but not beyond 36 months in the 3-year programme if training is extended by excess leave. The NBEMS page does not state an amount; check your hospital's offer. For degree courses in NMC-regulated colleges, PGMER-2023 clause 5.4 requires a stipend at par with state or central government PG students in that state or UT.
Is DNB or MD better after NEET-PG?▼
Neither is better in general. The qualification is equivalent for teaching when the training conditions above are met, so the practical differences are training setting, case load, faculty and seat terms such as fees and bond at the specific seat. Compare the seat, not the label.
