What does each UPSC CMS paper contain?

Each past paper follows the structure UPSC fixes in its notice, so attempting one is a close rehearsal of the real exam: 120 questions in 120 minutes, which is one minute per question.

PaperQuestions by subject (current notice)Marks
Paper IGeneral Medicine 96 · Paediatrics 24250
Paper IISurgery 40 · Gynaecology & Obstetrics 40 · Preventive & Social Medicine 40250

Because Paper I is mostly General Medicine, a weak score there is hard to recover elsewhere. Paper II is three equal blocks, so a gap in any one of Surgery, OBG or PSM costs a third of the paper. Use your first few papers to find which block pulls your score down, then target it. The UPSC CMS exam pattern page explains the marking and the interview in detail.

How should you work through UPSC CMS past papers?

  1. Start recent. The latest papers reflect the current syllabus and question style most closely, so attempt 2026 and the years just before it first.
  2. Sit each paper in one go. 120 questions in 2 hours is the real pace. Practising Paper I in the morning and Paper II in the afternoon rehearses exam day, when both papers are written on the same day.
  3. Mark with the real penalty in mind. A wrong answer costs one third of the question’s marks. Note which of your wrong answers were guesses and which were confident mistakes; the confident ones point to concepts to revisit.
  4. Review every explanation. Read the explanation for the questions you got right as well, to check that you got them right for the right reason.
  5. Go back to older papers by topic. Once the recent papers are done, older years show which topics UPSC returns to. Match them against the UPSC CMS syllabus.
